Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Abbott Finishes Second at Ridgecrest Jumps Into AMA Hare and Hound Points Battle
RIDGECREST, Calif. (February 12, 2007)
Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Destry Abbott put in a solid second-place finish Sunday at round two of the AMA National Hare and Hound series at Red Mountain.
Abbott looked to get things back on track after not being able to finish the first round. He ran with the front-runners for the entire 80 mile course, but a crash broke his front brake lever and ended his shot at the win.
“Overall, I was really happy with my speed, fitness, and the way the bike worked,” said Abbott. “I made one mistake and it cost me the win. I really felt like I should have won, but that’s the way racing is. I know I still have a great shot at the championship and I’ll just keep working hard.”
The Red Mountain race enabled Abbott to close the gap in the series point standings after Russell Pearson, the first round winner, did not finish due to bike problems.
“Considering we have a throw away round in the series, we’re still very much alive and in the mix for this championship,” said Jason Smigel, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s off-road supervisor. AMA rules for the Hare and Hound series provide each rider to throw away the worst round. When throwing away each rider’s worst round so far, Abbott sits third in the overall points.
Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Team Green rider Josh Morros won the 250cc expert class aboard his Kawasaki KX250F and took sixth-place overall. Kawasaki riders flooded the top overall finishing positions with nine out of the top-20 riding Kawasaki bikes.
The third round of the AMA National Hare and Hound series takes place in El Centro, Calif. on March 25.
