Coughlin to join NBA All-Star Redd in fundraising golf tournament

On his 43rd birthday today, Jack Beckman claimed his second Funny Car victory of the 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season and the eighth of his career in 15 final rounds at the NHRA Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. The triumph moved him into No. 4 in the point standings and also marked Don Schumacher Racing's 130th national-event win since 1998.

Tim Wilkerson Lost to Mike Neff in round one
Under most circumstances, Tim Wilkerson would put a first-round loss out of his mind and deep in the rearview as soon as it happened, preferring to look ahead and not backwards, but this was no normal first round. This time, as disappointing as the finish might be, Wilkerson was pleased and upbeat about how his Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby reacted, how it posted its best run of the weekend, and how safely it made the lap, never in any danger of spinning the tires like it had all weekend. This time, he didn't mind looking back, with a nod and a smile.

BROWN QUALFIES MATCO TOOLS DRAGSTER FIFTH AT NORWALK

Antron Brown, the current NHRA Top Fuel points leader, drove his Mike Ashley-owned Matco Tools dragster to the No. 5 qualifying position Saturday afternoon at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park. Now the four-time Top Fuel winner looks to join Ashley as a winner at the Norwalk NHRA race. Ashley earned the Funny Car title at the inaugural Norwalk race in 2007.

DISAPPOINTED WILK PART OF "ALSO RAN" GROUP

"Notes & Quotes" from Tim Wilkerson, driver of the Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Mustang Funny Car, after Friday's qualifying sessions at Summit Motorsports Park, in hot/muggy Norwalk, Ohio
Tim Wilkerson hasn't had to come back to his pit and decipher the reasons for an 0-for-2 day very often this year, but that was exactly the task he faced after spinning the tires during both Friday sessions in Norwalk. Under a blazing sun on the first run, Wilkerson was simply part of the total package, since no Funny Cars made full laps under power without tire spin. On the second run, however, when the sun was low in the sky and the track temperature became reasonable, the class began to show off a bit and make some stout passes. Wilkerson, though, spun the hoops again. Heading into the second day of qualifying, therefore, he is part of the five-driver group of "also rans" who have no official time, and with another hot one predicted, that group of five may very well be simply fighting for the last four spots in the field, which are filled on Saturday.
